WORKSHOPS ON BRAZILIAN MUSIC
featuring the popular & folcloric
language

The Hungarian composer&arranger Ian Guest (Janos Geszti) from Brazil, his adopted country, presents short workshops on Brazilian music, the extension of which may vary from one to two days. It may be a one-day marathon or 3 hour sections on two following days. A selective test of the participants may be of good use in endavour to form homogeneous and high-standard classes. The number of participants may vary, but in exceding numbers the daily period is to extend for personal accompaniment to all students. Ian Guest speaks fluent English, Hungarian and Portuguese and has a working knowledge in German, Spanish and French.

THE WORKSHOPS

The main idea of the experience is to present Brazilian popular music, part of it with folcloric roots, since mid-20th century, through "bossa nova" of Jobim and Gilberto – "tropicalia" of Caetano and Gil – "clube de esquina" of Milton Nascimento – "MPB" ("Música Popular Brasileira") of Buarque and mainstream - up to the latest upcoming composer-talents of these days. Some of the selected fourty instrumental and vocal recordings will be shown, as well as some of the printed lead-sheets with chord-changes (offered in a workbook) will be played by the participants, featuring the full-tempered Brazilian rhythmic/harmonic/melodic flavour, its observation and reproduction.

Pre-requisites: to master musical notatiom on staff & chord-change symbols; to play an instrument or sing fairly well.
